Search Engine Optimization (SEO) sounds simple in theory. Make your websites optimized for search engines so that when people search for certain keywords your page is destined to reach the top page. Some code, some writing best practices, some key blogging formats, and you’re all set to reach the top organic hit on Google’s search results.

If only it were that easy.

In reality, SEO is a cat-and-mouse game involving a variety of dimensions and a rule book that is constantly changing. For one, Google constantly adjusts its algorithm to punish so-called “black hat” SEO practices while discouraging spam, low-quality content, and sites that only exist to link to other sites owned by the same person or group. This means the quick and easy SEO strategy isn’t going to win the game — in fact, Google will punish you for playing loose with the rules of the Internet as they see them.

On the other hand, there is constant competition in the content generation world, and what actually rises to the top is partly the result of random chance. Every once in awhile something will go viral and, no one has a predictable model for what will catch on and what won’t. When something goes viral, it gets plenty of links that help the content and its site rise to the top.

But the only reliable way to go viral is to have good content that people naturally care about and then promote it heavily on those channels where the right people will see it. In other words, SEO isn’t just about making sure certain keywords and codes are placed on the right Web pages; it’s also about creating good content that people truly care about and marketing that content to an ever-growing Internet audience.
